Best Torrent Client Ubuntu Mate

Applications for Ubuntu/Linux are not at all in short supply. But picking the best from the rest is not an easy thing to do. There are a number of really good bit torrent clients for Ubuntu out there. Here we intend feature a collection of 5 really good bit torrent clients for Ubuntu which we think are among the best.

There are some torrent clients that you can run on a headless server. I dunno if you can control them via console, but the following clients are controllable via web interface: torrentflux; deluge; Torrentflux is available in the Ubuntu repositories, but I think in a quite outdated version now. Deluge can be obtained from the getdeb. Feature Overview: Lightweight torrent client. Native Mac, GTK+, & Qt GUI clients. Deluge is a free, open-source and lightweight BitTorrent client, available for Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and Windows. It has a rich collection of plugins that you can install to extend its functionality. The latest stable version, 1.3.13, was released on July 20, 2016. Deluge BitTorrent 1.3.13.

Deluge Bit Torrent Client
Deluge is among my favorite bit torrent clients for Ubuntu. It is fast, slick and packed with all sorts of functionalities. Deluge is not available in Ubuntu by default, but its in the repositories.
  • Click Here to Install Deluge in Ubuntu from official repositories.
  • Now, if you want to install the latest bleeding edge version of Deluge instead, you need to do the following in Terminal.
  • Done. Now goto Applications - Internet - Deluge BitTorrent Client.
Transmission Bit Torrent Client
As you all should know already, Transmission is the default bit torrent client in Ubuntu for a long time now. Transmission is a nice mix of simplicity and functionality. And it is my second favorite bit torrent client(after Deluge). It incorporates all the basic features you would expect from a torrent client.

  • Transmission is available by default in Ubuntu. But if you want to install the latest bleeding edge version of browser in Ubuntu, you need to do the following in Terminal.
  • Done. Now goto Applications - Internet - Transmission BitTorrent Client.
qBittorrent Bit Torrent Client
The qBittorrent project aims to provide a Free Software alternative to µtorrent. Additionally, qBittorrent runs and provides the same features on all major platforms including Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. Like the ones we featured before, qBittorrent is also available in Ubuntu repositories by default.

  • Click Here to Install qBittorrent in Ubuntu from official repositories.
  • Now, if you want to install the latest bleeding edge(and unstable) version of qBittorrent instead, you need to do the following in Terminal.
  • Done. Now goto Applications - Internet - qBittorrent.
KTorrent Bit Torrent Client
This is not really a tailor made bit torrent client for Ubuntu GNOME. KTorrent is a KDE application and it looks complete out of place in a GNOME desktop. But apart from that, from a functionality point of view, KTorrent is a more than adequate torrent client of Ubuntu.

  • Click Here to Install KTorrent in Ubuntu from official repositories.
  • You can install latest version under development version of KTorrent instead via Kubuntu backports PPA(though I haven't tried it myself).
  • Done. Now goto Applications - Internet - KTorrent.
Vuze Bit Torrent Client
Vuze bit torrent client is also a widely used alternative among Ubuntu users. Though I have never really preferred it over the likes of Deluge or Transmission, I have noticed elsewhere that a lot of Linux users actually prefer Vuze(previously called Azureus).
  • Click Here to Install Vuze in Ubuntu from official Ubuntu repositories.
Hope this list proves to be of real help for newbie Ubuntu users. For those you have just started using Ubuntu, you might want to check out this collection of applications of all kinds you might want to install after installing Ubuntu.

BitTorrent is a method of downloading big files. The big file is broken down into smaller parts and it automatically fetches parts from multiple hosts at once. It also shares the parts you've already downloaded with others, so that everybody shares and benefits. It is a good way to download Ubuntu iso releases, especially when the regular release sites are slow, since it actually gets faster when there are lots of users downloading and sharing at once. Bittorrent is considered a Peer-to-Peer(P2P) application. To see other P2P applications, see P2PHowTo. Ubuntu includes a graphical bittorrent client already installed. Kubuntu includes the KTorrent graphical client already installed. Also see the Wikipedia article on BitTorrent. For help with Synaptic for installing other software, see SynapticHowto.

Using BitTorrent files

To start a torrent download, click on a .torrent file in your web browser. The software will then ask you where you want to save the file and keep you updated on the progress. You can also save the .torrent link to a folder. Double-clicking on the .torrent will then open the bittorrent client.

In addition, the program can be launched in Ubuntu (Gnome) by selecting Applications->Internet->Transmission.

You can also pause or stop a download, and resume it later on.

Ubuntu .torrent files

Ubuntu bittorrent files can be found at http://releases.ubuntu.com/ or at http://torrent.ubuntu.com

You can choose from a variety of available forms (32-bit/i386 and 64-bit/amd64, dvd or cd). Choose your distribution number/codename (e.g. Ubuntu 9.04) to find the appropriate torrent file you are looking for.
